DEAR FUTURE ME

 Dear Future Me,

Wherever you might be, I hope this letter finds you well. You are 41 now, which is hard to comprehend. You are far out of college and hopefully are married, maybe you have kids? My mind is full of curiosity, wondering what experiences we’ve had and what wisdom we’ve gained along the way.

First of all, I hope you are happy; I hope you’re feeling content with the life we’ve created for ourselves and have pursued our dreams like we’ve always hoped we would. Life is too short, so I hope you are living it to the fullest. You are capable of so much, I hope you still remember that and have the courage to go after what you want. I hope all of our family and friends are well, do we still speak to all of them? I hope so. Some of the relationships I have now, I can’t imagine going without. So, there’s no doubt in my mind the people I love will be by my side in 20 years. Have you traveled the world like we wanted to? Where do you live? New York City? I know that’s always been our dream. Maybe back home in Maine? Possibly Italy?

Also, what about work? I hope you’re a publicist for a famous person, but maybe our dreams have changed. Oh! Do we have a cat named Bowie? I really hope so we’ve always wanted that. Maybe we even have more pets. This year we are graduating college, although for you I’m sure that seems like a lifetime ago. So much has probably happened, things I can’t even fathom right now.

There have most likely been many challenges, but we always get through them, remember? Hold on to our childhood please, it already feels like it’s slipping away, I can’t imagine what two decades will do. Hopefully that childhood can be expressed through the children I hope we have. I’m thinking of two, one boy and one girl; you know how much we hated being an only child.

I can’t imagine having met the love of my life, but I hope by now we have, otherwise that would be quite depressing. Anywho, I hope all is well, and I hope we didn’t take our young adulthood for granted, because I am so excited to experience it. Before I go, please remember to be kind to yourself.

Laugh as much as you can, experience as much as possible, and love yourself and others with everything in you. Again, life is short, never take the days we get for granted; I’m still learning to do that now. The choices I make today will affect you, so I hope I’m making the right ones, but I have faith. Don’t be afraid of change, our life has only just begun!

My 21-year-old self giving my 41-year old self advice seems a bit strange, but I hope this helps. I wish you the best of luck for your future, and I can’t wait to see where we are. I know you’ve made the right choice.

Warm Regards,

21-year-old You
